application hangs momentarily

Just purchased a new computor with Windows XP Home Edition. I've noticed that when running applications , especially playing games, the programs hang up ( freeze on the screen ) momentarily about every 3 or 4 minutes. I've re-set all the display and performance settings and tried a clean boot but nothing changes. Any help would be appreciated
