Hi,
My PC had been running great for some time then I started to get the odd
"application hang" mainly when updates for my Avast security system were
automatically installed.
It now "appplication hangs" on a regular basis mainly when the Avast updates
are occuring but sometimes on it's own, even my Outlook has had the
occasional hang.

Have you got Avast checking Outlook? If so, uninstall Avast and
reinstall it without that option. Having Avast check your email is
redundant and can cause these kinds of problems.
