Good morning to everyone, I got a problem with Windows Defender. When I turn
on my pc an error come out: “application failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A
problem has caused Windows Defender Service to stop.”

I downloaded the last version of the application and I tried to update but
during the installation another error come out: “the installer has
encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a
problem with this package. The error code is 2318.”

I try to download another time the Windows Defender package but nothing has
changed. I tried to remove the Windows Defender version previously installed
but, again, the installer error comes out. I don’t know what to do, can
anyone help me, please? Thanks, have a nice day

Hello Mefisto,

For the error code 2318
Locate your file msi.dll (with search for files/folders if you are
not sure where it's located) and confirm what the version is, either from
it's properties or just passing your cursor over it. If it's not the
latest which is 3.1.4000.2435, then:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803/

Engel,
I have the same problem. I don't get the error 2318, but I do get the
"Application Failed to Initialize" with the same error code, 0x800106ba.
I've done about everything that Mefisto did with the same results. I tried
to start it manually, but I just get an error that says try again. No luck.
Do you have any idea how to get over this problem?

Hello Len,

This is a long shot
Have you checked your system date and time settings to make sure they are
correct?

Engel,
Thanks, but I've solved my problem. I went to the Knowledge DB and found
that the reason for this error is that it is associated with the version that
expires 12/31/06. It simply expires and won't boot up anymore. I downloaded
the latest version and it loads up just fine and works very well. Thanks for
trying, but it was apparently a much simpler problem than I had perceived and
once I followed some advice about reading before panicking, things worked out.
