I'm getting applications errors every so often while my computer shuts down
referencing a a function that could not read the memory, something sort of
like this:

The instruction at 0X000E4a50 reference memory at 0X000E4a50. the memory
could not be "written"

That's not the exact message, as I still don't know what it refers to. All I
know is when it occurs, it asks me to either terminate or debug it, and it
turns the top bar on that window black just before the screen turns off.

One other time this same error came up, I was using my Verizon Yahoo!
browser and after clicking OK it forced it to close while I was workingon
something. I look in the event viewer and found this:

This has only happened that one time, and two minutes later when I shut down
it did the black top bar error again.

This indicate that you have Yahoo IE browser and the Plug-ins for QuickTime!.

Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

3... You may have a bad RAM try to test your RAM by running Memtest by
downloading this tool and unzip it and make a floppy or CD/DVD and run it on
Reboot.
