Hi,

I'd like to install Adobe Framemaker 5.5.6 on my new
portable, running Windows XP (incl. SP2).
However, the installation program (autorun) gives me the
following error message:

Director Player 5.0 <--- title bar
----------------------
This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory
to run.
------------------------------------------------------------

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Bart,

Seems I have the exact same problem installing WinFax 8.0 which apparetnly
also uses a MacroMedia Director 5.0 Player to install the software from the
CD ROM.

TITLE BAR: DIRECTOR 5.0 PLAYER
ERROR MESSAGE: "This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to
run"

Did you have any luck with the article referenced by ERIC who responded to
your question. Boy don't we hate to have to discard perfectly good programs
because the install program does not work properly...this is a really
frustrating situation.

Eric Thanks for the info I will see if the VM article has any help...I am
also receiveng the same error message as Bart when I try and install my
Symantec WinFAx 8.0 which apparently also has that same Director Player 5.0
based install program.

It comes up starts to load then I get
DIRECTOR PLAYER 5.0 title bar containing the following message...
"This program requires at least 3MB of free virtual memory to run."
Let us know if you find any solution that works and I shall do the
same...most annoying...I wish installs were just nice text scripts that would
just execute not complicated GUI cinematic presentations...we would not have
all these problems.

Bart, If you have more than one hard drive, and you are trying to install
onto a drive other than C, you need to go into the virtual memory and assign
that drive some memory. Be sure to leave some on 'c'. I noticed that XP
assigned all my memory to "C". I just distributed it across my drives. No
more problems.

It is not necessary that every drive have a page file, though it's not
clear from your post how you are recommending it be done. The best
thing is to review Alex Nichol's article on virtual memory to understand
how it works and how best to manage it.

I read Mr. Nichol's article. I am only saying that this worked for me.

But you never said exactly what you did, so "this worked for me" doesn't
mean much. Do you have two page files, one on each drive with the
bigger of the two on the second drive or do you have a page file on each
partition with multiple partitions on each drive? What are the page
file sizes, etc?

However you did it I really don't care. I am just pointing out to the
OP to be sure he reads the article so he can know how it should be set up.

With such things it can be better to go to All Programs - Accessories -
Program Compatibility Wizard, browse to the Setup or Install concerned,
and tell it to run as if in Win98
