Is there a difference between which notification shows when someone appears
to be offline and when they are in fact off line? For instance, in the
messenger window it says "**** appears to be offline and may not reply".
This implies to me that the person is only appearing to be offline. Or is
this the same notfication for when one is offline and appearing offline?

Greetings Marc,

When you see this, it means they've gone offline -- either disconnected or otherwise. This
does not mean that the person has set themselves to "Appear Offline" (although of course,
they could have).

No there is not a difference in the message between someone setting "appear
offline" and actually being offline.
