I have a HP laptop with XP Pro. Through an endless battle with my ISP I have
been provided with 2 different wireless routers, the most recent of which
appears to function satisfactorarily.

However, my computer seems to remember an old password used for the first
router, and despite removing all wireless networks from my list of preferred
networks this still occurs. Under the properties tab, the password or the
new network is entered correctly (as this is a long standing variation), and
saved - yet when trying to connect to the network an old password is
resurrected and entered, with the new one being superceded and overwritten
each time.

My problem is this - I am not completely proficient in thi subject matter,
and am really unsure what the root cause of the problem could be - whether
this is something to do with a piece of HP software which comes bundled with
the computer, or whether this may be a problem with windows?

Any help or assistance would really be greatly appreciated.

If you have both the XP Wireless Zero service and a 3rd party (HP) WLAN
connection utility make sure only one is running. Either disable the
Wireless Zero service (Administrative Tools -Services) or disable/uninstall
the 3rd party tool. They will conflict and that could be the source of your
problem.

Alternatively, does your WLAN software (XP Wireless Zero?) show the password
or just placeholders for the characters (asterisks, dots)? Sometimes the
WLAN software shows placeholder characters in the password line even though
no password is entered. I'm thinking perhaps your password/phrase might not
be saved at all. That would likely be due to a misconfigured setting.
