Apostrophe converts to equal sign

When I merge a Word 2002 document with my data software, the apostrophe " is
converted and replaced by an equal sign = . For example: "Attorney's" is
what it should look like but it comes out as "Attorney=s". My font is larger
/ increased from the original document as well. Any advise?
