apipa address allocation

can anyone let us know how a windows xp computer behaves with respect to
retrying dhcp lease processes after being automatically configured with a
169 apipa address say when the dhcp server is not available

does it have to be reset or does it attempt dhcp of its own accord after an
interval ??
