APC UPS cause XP PC to go into hibernation

My Dell Dimension using XP and a APC UPSPro500 has an interesting
problem. It had been working fine with the APC plugged into the USB for
software power monitoring using the APC software. But now the PC went
into hibernation mode with the Dell power light flashing yellow..
Doing a cold restart doesn't help, the PC goes right into hibernation
mode. If I unplug the APC from the USB the PC starts fine, but as soon
as you plug in the APC to the USB, the PC goes right into hibernation
mode.

Any ideas?

Try removing and reinstalling the driver for the APC, or disable the APC
servicing utility.
You may be using windows built in capabilities, and/or APC's software. It's
possible for them to have a conflict.
It may be time to look for updated APC software from the web site.

The APC software (home version) is setup to cause hibernation when there
is a power outage that exceeds the timer (this can be set by you when
logged in as an administrator). The first thing I would check if you can
boot up is whether you had a power outage. It is possible that your
battery is shot and the remaining time before a shut down is shorter
than the remaining battery life. Boot up with the UPS USB unplugged,
then plug in the USB connector, then run a battery self test if there is
no immediate shutdown. If it gripes, that's your problem and it needs to
be replaced. If that's not the problem or you get an immediate shutdown,
call APC. Their phone support is pretty good, free, and most of the
people are fairly knowledgeable.
