AOL installation problems

I had a very old computer running windows Me (yes, you heard right) and never
had a single problem with it in 9 years, including with AOL. I loaded XP on
it and everything works fine, except I can't install AOL now (which worked
fine before). One of two things usually happens:

After I upload AOL from an installation disk, I get a message saying "AOL
will now install files you need to run AOL. You will need to restart to use
AOL". I click yes, reboot, and instead of AOL loading I get the same message
over and over again in an endless loop, like it keeps trying to finish
installing but won't.

The second is, on a few occasions I actually got he AOL screen to open, and
in "adding a modem" (Ihave dial-up) it won't recognize the modem or
initialize it in order for me to get to the screen where I can then pick
access numbers. The modem is working fine, there are no firewalls, and the
mdoem responds when I query it. Yet XP won't detect or recognize the modem to
talk to it. I even had this computer into a shop where the experts can't
figure it out and say everything is working correctly.

Is this an AOL problem or an XP problem? I'd hate to have to give up XP
just to use AOL., and I have another computer worked just fine with ME
without a problem. Has anyone else out there had this kind of problem? I
know, this one's a challenge!

What in the world do you need AOL for?

You need to be using a firewall! Make sure you enable the built-in Windows
Firewall immediately.

If AOL provides your dialup connection, how do you know the modem "is
working fine"? Did you test it with HyperTerminal and get it to call a cell
phone (for example)?

Another thought - are you using the latest version of AOL? You mentioned
installing "from an installation disk". If you are trying to use the AOL
disk that came with your ME machine, it is extremely outdated. Although
back in the day AOL disks littered the landscape like fallen autumn leaves,
I'm not sure where you would get one now. You may need to call AOL and have
them send you one.

If the above isn't applicable to you, contact AOL tech support.

Perhaps the wrong response file was used to set up the modem in XP. Try
making sure that the modem is actually identified as the model that it
really is.

Are you aware that you can not install AOL 9.1 or AOL 10.1 on Windows ME? The
highest version you can use on Windows ME is AOL 9.0 VR, or the previous AOL
9.0 SE. AOL 9.0 VR is available from AOL's download page.

While you say that "I even had this computer into a shop where the experts
can't figure it out and say everything is working correctly." but in the
same line you say "Yet XP won't detect or recognize the modem to talk to it.
" it is obvious that the "experts" didn't know what they were doing to say
that. If XP isn't recognizing the modem, AOL can't either.

Get into your system manager and check the modem yourself. If in system
manager there is a yellow exclamation mark on the modem it doesn't have the
correct drivers or isn't set up correctly. There were some win-modems that
would not upgrade from ME to XP. Without knowing the make and model of the
modem, this is the best answers I can give at this time. Check your system
documentation or run Belarc Advisor www.belarc.com to determine the type of
modem you have and report back. With the make and model of modem you may be
able to go to the manufacturer's web site (either computer or modem) and
download XP drivers for the modem.

I had it in the shop and they ran a diagnostics and checked out the modem,
said it was working fine and had all the correct drivers. Also, I am not
using the disc that came with ME but an AOL 9.0 disc directly from them.

Someone else said that the latest AOL version won't work with ME. Since I
don't support AOL professionally, I don't know this to be true. I would
contact AOL tech support since this is apparently their issue.

It's the fact that you are using an old AOL disk for a new OS
