AOL AVS (KAV) updates working again?

I believe the updates are working again, without the need to modify
the hosts file. I was at a client today whose updates weren't working,
modified the hosts file and updated his system. Went to do likewise
with his wife's computer and it was right up-to-date! Just tried
restoring the hosts file on my wife's computer and doing the update
and it updated, using the aol mirror for a second or two, then usig
Kaspersky's servers for the rest. Anyone else notice this?

What change to the hosts file?

Also Is it still possible to download the installer, say from
oldsoftware.com - I've not bothered looking since AOL changed the
provider

You do not need to modify the hosts file. Simply go to the config file and
remove the two AOL entries. Hang on to the registration key because I've
heard that Kaspersky asks for it once a year.

The path for mine is: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\AOL\AVP6\Data\aol-updcfg.xml

You need a registration key which you cannot get any more. No need to
change the hosts file.

Shutdown AOL AVS from the tray. Then simply go to the config file and
remove the two AOL entries. Hang on to the registration key because I've
heard that Kaspersky asks for it once a year.

The path for mine is: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\AOL\AVP6\Data\aol-updcfg.xml

Use a text editor to open and modify the file. The two top lines in mine
had AOL in the url. After removing them, the program updated and added two
new lines with newaol to this file. It is updating fine though it did ask
for a reboot after the first update. I suppose this is when the two new
lines were added.

Edit the HOSTS file to include "127.0.0.1 download.newaol.com"
(without the quotes), shut down and restart the computer. When AVS
starts, richt-click the AVS icon in Systray and click Update. One used
to get errors and a message that signatures were invalid, and could
not continue. Now it redirects to the Kaspersky servers. The HOSTS
file change prevents the program from downloading the signatures that
trigger that message, and the downloads work without problem coming
from the KL.

If you already downloaded the installer and have the e-mail with the
registration key, you can re-install the program but that won't extend
the license. It would be interesting to try it after running the
Kaspersky removal program
(http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208279463). I don't believe one
can get a new installer.

The updates are working without problems since 3 last days (from AOL).
I use AVS 2.5

Hmmmm. As of yesterday, mine was not updating until I made the above
change. Now I will never know for my system eh?

Jo, thanks for that confirmation!

BTW, I have Bear Bottoms kill-filed, so only saw his post while
reading this one. I had edited the aol-updcfg.xml but a new one gets
downloaded during the update, replacing the edited version, so the
HOSTS file edit was required. Irrelevant, as it now works without
changes to either file.

As long as you still have your activation key, you can download it from here:

With all the posts lately about how to get the updates working again, I decided to try AVS again. I had already uninstalled it, using Total Uninstall to make sure I removed it completely. Since I had already deleted the installer, I had to find a download site that still offered it from their server.
I found it here - http://www.softsea.com/review/Active-Virus-Shield.html
This version (6.0.2.621) was slightly newer version than the one I had been using. After entering the activation key, my license now doesn't expire until 9/5/2008. Also, the updates are working fine using the AOL servers.
