This is my 86 year old father's computer. Windows XP. It came from aol and
all software and browser is aol oriented. There is no direct shortcut to
Internet Explorer. I have searched for Internet Explorer throught the hard
drive and can't find anything that is not part of the aol package. He wants
to try a different ISP. I downloaded the IE sp1 but no standard internet
explorer came with it.

Any suggestions?

Since this is XP, I believe IE must be there somewhere. Try searching
for iexplore.exe. That's the actual filename for Internet Explorer.
It's usually located in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer, but other
locations are possible.

It's been quite a while since I used it, but I thought that IE6SP1 was the
complete package rather than an update.

I'm not at that computer anymore. It's 200 miles away. I searched for
explorer and there was an Internet explorer folder but was all aol related.
I got the runaround when I called aol. Finally got a location that was
supposed to handle aol optimized computers but they were closed.

Microsoft indicated that sp1 included ie6. But I'll be darned if I can find
it. I wonder if aol did something with the registry to make sp1 think that
ie6 is there and so there is no need to load it again. I will check for an
aol newsgroup and see what I can find. Thanks for writing.
