My mom continually wants to involve me in her pastime - word puzzles
etc. I don't want to be rude to her; and don't share her interest or
want to waste time on it . . .

Is there some software that can take a random set of letters and
return all the words that can be spelled with it (in English)?

That's only true if you are biting your toe nails.

See the A.C.F alternative FAQ at http://stalkingsheep.co.uk/antifaq.htm
In an unmoderated NG you can control what you read and what you write.
That's all you can control.

default needs to realize that his mother is probably trying to teach him
to not be so easy to push around.

Tell your mother you are not interested, and don't worry about her
feelings, start worrying about your own life instead, you have only one
chance to live, and you cannot spend it worrying about your mothers
feelings.

She is very likely big enough to take care of her own feelings. She
wants you to take care of yourself, and not be an easy pushover for any
women that shows up and starts pushing you around.

You don't have to be rude to be free. Tell her off with a nice smile.

Don't be afraid to enjoy women and feelings, but whenever it becomes a
threat to your freedom remember this episode with your mother, and tell
them off without being rude, with a smile.

My "problem" is I tend to be a little too insensitive. I assure you
no one is pushing me around. If there is a fault, it lies in the
other direction.

The old girl is getting on in years. She lives a long way from me and
I only wanted some way to deal with the monthly (snail) mail. I
don't figure it would be too much of an inconvenience if I were to be
a little less brusque with her.

Again, no danger of being pushed around. Maybe its that Navy SEAL
training - ya think?

I don't understand what prompted that last statement. You are
inferring far more than any statement of mine would justify.

Me? I'm planning on popping open a home-brew and go clean the turtle
aquarium, maybe listen to some Vivaldi. The only persons I worry
about pleasing are me, my wife, my father, the rest of the world I try
to treat with a modicum of curtesy - beyond that I don't care what
anyone thinks.
