I recently dusted off a computer that had some data that I needed.
The data was there.. all is ok.

However, in booting the computer it would give an invalid boot drive -
and then proceed to boot up in win2000.

In the boot.ini the last line is
c:\="Microsoft Windows"

and there is a C:\windows directory, as well as a \win98, with cabs in
it.

I believe this drive only has one partition. However, I find
application executables - however none of them have been registered
with win2000 and none of the applications run. Is is possible that
this machine dual booted win98 win2000?. What would be the easiest way
to find out?

The primary reason for asking is that the cd burners don't work, but I
know I have burned cd's on this machine.. more evidence suggesting
win98.

This is (or was) a dual boot machine but its drive C: may have been
converted to NTFS, thus rendering Windows 98 inoperative. Post
the full contents of c:\boot.ini and report the file system of drive C:!

Getting back to your original post: If you want to revitalise
Win98 in order to run your CD burner then you could to so
but it would be a major effort. Much easier to reload the
CD burning software under Win2000.
