Hi all.

Still can't get that Windows XP Home to load over my Win 98 !! (see
my previous post). Can someone tell me how to set up the BIOS and if software
may be causing the trouble.
At one stage I received the following message "Windows could not start
because file is missing <windows root>\system 32\hal.dII ... install a copy
of file" !!
What's all this ??

Upgrading from 98 to xp might seem like the way to go but, actually youre far
better off doing a "clean install" of xp.XP doesnt need or use 98 files,+
98 is
in FAT32 file system,xp by default runs on NTFS file system...Simply
install xp
cd,boot to xp cd (set BIOS for this if needed),at xp cd boot menu select
install xp,
press F8,agree,delete the partition(s),create one,then xp formats &
installs auto.
You will/might need the 98 cd to qualify for the upgrade, install just to
verify...

I see Andrew has crawled out of his hole and posted the same incorrect
drivel he always does. He is a troll; ignore him.

To the OP: It is completely possible in theory to upgrade a Windows 98
machine to Windows XP. However, are you sure your computer meets the far
more stringent requirements for Windows XP? Most machines that were
designed for Windows 98 will not.

Although some people have done it, I would not run XP on a machine with
less than a PIII 600 with 256MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive, and XP
would be quite slow on that system. You can post your machine specs
here, but I suspect that you should leave Windows 98 on your machine or
replace the machine.
