Hi all, bit of a weird one this but hope you are able to help.

Due to various long-term issues, my colleagues in another office went ahead
and reinstalled XP afresh, using File & Settings Transfer Wizard to restore
their files and settings to the new install, using the same User Profile
name.

However it seems there are some file access issues for some really weird
reason. Here are the odd things noticed (NB: 'Office' is the name of their
User Account both before & after reinstall):

- Many random files/folders do not allow access, and do not have 'Office'
set as an allowed user in the Security tab

- They can set the Owner back to 'Office', but have to search for it as a
user - it is not in the list of currently allowed users

- Some strange unknown accounts appear instead in many folders, with weird
names like S-1424-12412516-21634737727blahblahblah [-- you know what they
mean ]

- Virus-scan software 'could not access' 100s of random files, yet when they
try to open them outside the virus-checker (Computer Associates Security
Centre, as recommended on the Microsoft Security site) they open fine

- They use Window Washer or similar security prog to shred confidential
documents however even though it spends a long time shredding them, then
reports it has finished, the files are not even deleted, let alone shredded
(they say this worked fine before the reinstall)


So, is there some general task they can perform to get all files back to a
100% accessible, virus-scanable, deleteable, shreddable state?

I have had them set Office as the Owner for the entire drive, propagating to
all subfolders and files, but although it seemed to complete taking some
time, many files still do not have Office as the owner and all the above
issues remain.

PS:

- Also, all folders Properties pane shows Read Online not ticked or
unticked, but with the semi-selected 'box' in the tickbox, indicating some
of the files inside are read-only. This is on ANY folder. Also when
unticking it and applying to all contents, next time they go in, it is again
part-ticked.

You would probably get more help at a general Windows group rather than this
Media Center one, but:

- is "Office" an Administrator?

- Did your friend do a clean install, it sound like they did a repair, if
there are still old user profiles?

- Those odd user names (S-1424-12412516....) are usually artifacts from a
different Domain/Workgroup. For instance, if I have user security settings
on a PC logged into a domain, then log in locally on the PC, the domain
users will appear with those type names since their security is based on a
network not currently accessible.

Yep

Repair install, but there are no other profiles showing in CP or in System
Properties.

Odd, they aren't really networked - just Internet.

Any other ideas anyone?

PPS: The other odd thing is that some folders cause explorer to hang for up
to 2 mins. E.g. if they try to double-click 'My Videos' or Documents and
Settings folders, explorer 'thinks about it' for 2 mins, then finally opens.
During that time it reports 'Not responding' in Taskman. Yet curiously if
they use the Folders tree to open the folder, it works fine, just not from
within the folder using double-click. :-S
