when i export a erport to RTF ot DOC the headers don't line up with
the columns. they look ok when viewed in Access tho.

Have you tried PDF? Or do you need editability in the result?

What version of Access? If it's 2007 or 2010, you have builtin PDF
support. If not, it's more complicated...
