It would be VERY convenient to be able to rename a file while its in use. Apple's OS X can do it.
I wonder if there is some way of doing it in Windows XP?

Hi GeV,

The answer is no. The way to rename a file in use is to use "Save As".

....except that doesn't rename the file, it creates a new copy of the file.

WMP 11 allows file rename while the file is playing. I'm not sure when this
became possible - perhaps when I upgraded from WMP 10 to 11.

And then you rename it.

Well, I'm sure the "copy" doesn't have the same name as the original,
right? So "Save As" creates a "copy" that is "renamed". No
"exceptions" about it.

It depends on the program that has the file open. Example open a file in
Notepad, then rename it in explorer. If you change the contents and then
Save the file it will make a new file with the original name, so as long
as you only view the file you won't create multiple copies.

Most of the time its renaming music files that are playing in VLC.
Sometimes its video files playing in VLC or BS Player.
Sometimes its an .exe file.

I described how to RENAME a file while IN USE. There isn't any other
way. Regardless of whether you think what the outcome is, that's the
only way to do it in Windows. Are you going to split hairs about that?
