Hey all, im trying to free some room here and i have a questoin: IS the
memory were i click My Computer then right click C: drive and then
properties? it says 18.3 out of 55 GB left, is this the actualy memory or is
it the RAM? i don get the difference(i have 448 mb of ram).

Also how would i free up some room? Im not talking about speeding it up, but
freeing some room. I delted some pictures and used CC cleaner any more ideas?
And i deleted software/programs i didnt need.

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report. Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and
click on Save As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents
Folder and post a copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it
is more informative. This will help us see how your disk space is being
used.

I imagine that Gerry was asking for the output that you get when you
click the *report* button at the lower right of the image you posted,
but that report isn't particularly helpful in any case.

Download and run jdiskreport http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/

This will show you graphically what files are taking up the space on
your drive.

Crudely,

RAM, or Random Access Memory, can be thought of as a temporary scratch
pad that may be used for calculations or temporarily holding images and
the like while you are working on your computer. Anything stored in RAM
disappears when power is removed.

The disk (C:\ drive; hard drive) is a semi-permanent storage area. This
is where your documents, emails, images, and so forth are kept. This
information remains even if the power is turned off, but it can be
erased (deleted).

Programs or applications, such as Internet Explorer, are also stored as
files on the hard drive. When you want to run a program, some or all of
it is copied from the hard drive to RAM because the CPU (the "brain" of
the computer) can get at information stored in RAM much faster than it
can get at information stored on the hard drive. When you exit the
program, or turn off the computer, the copy of the program in RAM goes
away, but the copy on the hard drive remains.

I was asking for that output as I find a useful source of basic
information. Normally users copy / paste the text from volume.txt file
into their reply. Korea92 has posted a graphics image, which my security
arrangements do not like and the image is removed. I have no idea what
the report says.

A primary space waster within each user profile would be IE's
penchant for storing copies (or significant portions thereof) of nearly
every web page you've has ever visited. Try reducing the amount of
temporary Internet files cached, which is huge by default. I always
reduce it to a maximum of 50 Mb. In Internet Explorer, click Tools >
Internet Options > General, Temporary Files > Settings.

Same principle for the Java cache. Start > Control Panel > Java >
Temporary Internet Files > Settings.

The System Volume Information is the folder in which WinXP's System
Restore feature stores information used to recover from errors. By
default, WinXP sets aside a maximum of 12% of the partition's size for
storing System Volume Information, but the amount of space set aside for
this purpose can be adjusted by the user. Start > All Programs >
Accessories > System Tools > System Restore > System Restore Settings,
select the pertinent partition and click Settings. If you don't want to
use System Restore at all, and have another back-up/recovery measure in
place, simply turn off the System Restore feature (Start > All Programs
> Accessories > System Tools > System Restore, System Restore Settings)
and reboot. This will delete all of your Restore Points, freeing up the
hard drive space.

Another great waster of space can be the Recycle Bin. By default,
this takes up to 10% of your hard drive capacity. On today's large hard
drives, this is tremendously wasteful. It can be set to a lower limit
by right-clicking the desktop Receycle Bin icon, selecting Properties,
and using the slider bar to lower the maximum size to something more
reasonable -- 1% to 2% should be more than enough space.
