Try to find a utility that will wipe the free space on my boot volume.

I compress my boot volume, use it for a backup in case of disaster.

Volume compresses a lot better when free space is "wiped" to be all hex
zeroes.

Problem is, all the wipe utilities seem to wipe free space with random
ascii characters _instead_ of using hex zero.

FWIW, by boot volume is 48 GB.

My old WipeFree commandline tool can do this:

Sample:
WipeFree32 C:

It's a bit old (1999) and needs an update for
better performance...

Hello,

Killdisk allows to erase with "one-pass zeros" and "Wipes out free clusters"

Thanks for your pointer to Killdisk.

I forgot to mention that it was a Vista boot volume I was interested in
wiping with hex zeroes - - - without wiping any legitimate Vista files.

Thanks Uwe, if the Killdisk utility does not work for me, I will try
your WipeFree utility.

Appreciate your help.
