Recently, when I connect to internet, the traffic is unusually high without
running any application. I would like to check which application is accessing
Internet at the back end. Does anyone have any suggestions on any tools to
check the traffic source?

Sysinternal TCPView (freeware) will do that. Google it.

Another option is ZoneAlarm Free, its a firewall, not that you need one,
but it has the side effect of warning you when a new program accesses
the internet. You then get the opportunity to allow/block once or
allow/block forever.
You can adjust these via the program later if you wish. You can even
hit a button to stop all traffic.
