I am working with a site built using root relative links. Among other
problems, FrontPage is not applying the stylesheet to the pages when
the CSS file is imported using a root relative path.

Searching this group, I see complaints about this issue going back to
2001. Is there any solution (preference, add-in, hack, ANYTHING) that
will allow FrontPage to work correctly in this situation?

Changing the path is not a solution.

Among the reasons for using root relative links: links in included bits
of HTML will still work, and code copied from one part of the site to
another will still work without having to redo each link.

This has been a flaw in FrontPage for several years. Are the MVPs
seriously still claiming that it's not a serious issue?

Ok, so you've acknowledged that Frontpage won't work correctly. Can we
please get a fix?

MS doesn't consider it a bug, since it is how FP is designed to manage site content. Personally I
don't consider it a bug either, as relative URL in the way the FP create them works just fine or I
use ASP/VBScript to manage the URLs the basically need to be root relative.

Are you using a disc based web, or server based web?
I have never had a problem with root relative links in a server based
web (accessed using http://example.com/) , but will always expect
problems with disc based.
The root folder of a disc based web (in the context of root relative
links) is the root folder of the hard disc.

FrontPage is not designed to manage root relative links.

Server-based.

I am interested to hear how you have never experienced a problem with
these links, given your colleague's admission that not only do they not
work in FrontPage, but FrontPage was designed that way. (The "it's a
feature, not a bug" defense. Gotta love it.... or not.)

Of course relative URLs WORK. I am not suggesting otherwise. I AM
suggesting that root relative links are a better strategic choice for a
large site that makes use of, among other things, include files. It's
also wise when using a staging server and a production server with
different domains.

I should not have to explain these concepts to anyone who has worked in
web design for any length of time.

I had not spent much time using FP prior to this week. Between this
issue and FP's complete inability to maintain XHTML compliance, I begin
to see why FP is not generally considered a professional's tool.
