I recently saw a screensaver on a Mac, which showed a bunch of pretty
landscapes in a slide show. Yeah yeah, I know, slide show screensavers are
13 a dozen. However, this one had a couple of nice features I liked, and I
have never seen on a Windows screensaver. First of all, there was always a
subtle movement to the pictures, making them come alive. A slight zoom, a
rotation, a pan, just enough to make the picture more than a still. Second,
there was a crossfade transition, much better than the 90s PowerPoint-style
wipes that seem to be the standard on all other slide show savers I have
seen. And of course everything from the pans and zooms to the crossfades
were silky smooth.

Does anything similar exist for Windows?

Not combined, two different applications

2flyer screensaver/slideshow maker. on my Multimedia 1 page.

...tool which lets you make your own screensavers. Collects up to 1000
JPG/JPEG, GIF, BMP or WMF, EMF images and 2flyer will merge them into a
Screensaver Adds MP3, WAV or MID sound and music files to your
screensavers to be played while the images are displayed Displays images
with 240 transition effects - as many as you can imagine Creates a
single .exe screen saver installation file - email and share the
screensaver with your friends at any time.
Exclusive on my site courtesy of acf.

GTRipple On my Desktop2 page.
Now you can have a virtual pond on your Desktop without experiencing
water damage. This is an amazing toy; for its first version, GTRipple is
quite configurable and equally as stable. Your background image will be
set in motion indefinitely.

I looked for one of these myself but couldn't find anything except for
commercial products. One workaround would be to get a freeware called
Rostrum Camera, make an AVI of the pans and zooms then use a freeware
screensaver that displays AVI. I believe Slideshow Movie Maker also has the
ability to create this Ken Burns effect. It's a lot of effort for just a
screensaver, but you may want to convert them to DVD slideshows for archival
purposes.
