Hello,

I bought the Epson 4870 scanner yesterday but find the bundled
scanning software a bit limiting. Can anybody recommend some good
scanning software?

Thanks,
Stephen

The Epson software is fine if you get into Pro Mode.

I'd like to ask the same question of my HP Scanjet 5p scanner, which I
bought second-hand. It came with Deskscan II 2.9. Is there more recent
software for these scanners?

Thanks.

I've tried Precisionscan Pro (3.14) & Precision Scan LTX but they both
say "Sorry, sscanner could not be initialized. (Scanner not found.)"

From the install options of one of them it seems it may be looking for
a scanner in the USB port. The Scanjet 5p is SCSI.

However, I did find a thread on the web where someone claimed they had
used PrecisionScan software with their Scanjet 5p:

I must be missing something...

Thanks for any help.

Deskscan 2.9 was the last of that series for HP SCSI scanner line.
Dunno if any of the PrecisionScan series could work or not.

It costs $ but VueScan will work with it, I suppose...does with IICX, 3,
4 SCSI models. Free trial, hamrick.com.

For flatbed use though, I've generally had good enough results with
DeskScan on my old HP IIcx. What doesn't it do for ya?

Well, the older software tends to lock Windows up while the optical
mechanism goes back to position. Also, the window size is a little
small at a higher resolution and can't be resized.

Thanks for the info.

Minor correction: I just found out the preview size can be adjusted.
Not bad afterall.
