Are there any good freeare alternatives to the IRC newtowrk. I am not
looking for a good IRC porgrams I am for a alt to the newtork like IRC.

I highly recommend BitWise. It's really an instant messenger, but supports
conference, voice, file sharing, etc. Privacy is great, and you don't have
to kowtow to the likes of AOL, Microsoft, or Yahoo and eat their rubbish.

IRC is not a network. It is a protocol, used by several networks, such as
Undernet, Dalnet and Freenode.

AFAIK there are no alternative protocols doing the same job as IRC.

I would prefer a chat program that didn't need to connect to a central
server. Such a program is however hard to find. :-(

If one did use the above can one be invisible to everyone except one
other person, and vica versa ? I would like to communicate to someone
without just about everyone else in the world knowing when I/they are
online. But still have us both know when the other is online.

Never tried it, but I think so.

Yahoo Chat and Jabber Conference - But both suck a lot
