I saw a payware program some time back that looked very good, at least
in the description.

I imagine it's a question of inputing your courses and the times and
the program generates of timetable schedule of some sort.

Anything like that in freeware?

You could try ABC Timetable
http://www.abc-ware.com/abctime.htm

or a for the Palm Pilot
Student v1.0
http://www.freewarepalm.com/database/student.shtml
Uni Matrix
http://www.niemueller.de/software/palm/unimatrix/

Note: I wish companies and individuals would remove the words free
download from a shareware website as this is misleading to indicate a
FREEWARE product and not some download of a trial software just freely
downloadable.

should work and they or most anyways will tell you if theres a conflict
timewise.

Essential PIM

Folio First
http://www.h3k.biz/

Also check Student Diary as its now seems no longer supported and
release with a serial number, same page as Folio First

Kronos

RICOlmer

Advanced Diary

UK's Kalender

eQit

I hope one of these suits your needs.
