Hi "H Millward",
It's possible that an antivirus program is installed on your system and is corrupting the installation process. -- Cheers, Windows XP MVP Shell / User Jimmy S. http://mvp.support.microsoft.com Game FAQs: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=FH;[LN];gms Visit my Zone.com / Gaming Helpsite: http://nibblesnbits.tk or Call / Contact MS Support at: http://support.microsoft.com/default...d=sz;en-us;top My advice is donated "AS IS" without warranty; nor do I confer any rights. _________________________________________________________ <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:1338501c443e2$64a102c0$(E-Mail Removed)... | I have a big problem when it comes to installing games, I | used to suffer from it a while ago but it sorted itself | out. thanks Jimmy, for the suggestion, I do have antivirus
software installed (McAfee Internet Security 6.0, fully up to date) however the problems persist sometimes even when I disable it, although could it be possible that if my virus scan was disabled AFTER beginning to install BUT BEFORE copying files that the virus scanner would cause difficulty? >-----Original Message----- >Hi "H Millward", > >It's possible that an antivirus program is installed on your >system and is corrupting the installation process. > >-- >Cheers, Windows XP MVP Shell / User >Jimmy S. http://mvp.support.microsoft.com > > >Game FAQs: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx scid=FH;[LN];gms >Visit my Zone.com / Gaming Helpsite: http://nibblesnbits.tk or Call / Contact >MS Support at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx? scid=sz;en-us;top >My advice is donated "AS IS" without warranty; nor do I confer any rights. >_________________________________________________________ > > <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:1338501c443e2$64a102c0$(E-Mail Removed)... >| I have a big problem when it comes to installing games, I >| used to suffer from it a while ago but it sorted itself >| out. Hi,
Yes, unfortunately that is a distinct possibility. Let's reinstall... Here's how to properly install or reinstall a game (and patch): Step A: Temporarily disable Startup programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus & AdBlockers using this method: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=331796 or this utility: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php Reboot, go to Step B. Step B: In Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs, delete the game and then the game's folder especially if you previously experienced problems with a patch, or if you installed the Trial, Mods, NO CD patches, etc. Note: Click Start to Search or Find your game. Many times there are two installs of the same game on a system and the patch installs to the wrong one. Also if you installed a Trial version of the game, this could be causing a conflict.. Uninstall it and delete the folder. Step C: Install and Run Regcleaner and if it finds any stray registry keys for the game, delete them. Reboot your computer, and then re-install the game. Regcleaner Download: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html Step D: Play a single player game, using an administrators account if necessary. Step E: Download new game patches or mods in case the old ones are corrupt. Double click the patch/mod to install it. If it's a .zip file, unzip it into the game's folder and follow the instruction in it's readme.txt file. Step F: Reboot your computer, verify that your game is working properly, and re-enable any programs that you disabled using the method in Step A. Cheers, Jimmy S. Thanks are due yet again but I was wondering, is it
strictly necessary to disable everything in MSCONFIG or can I just boot up normally and disable them when they load and attempt to install without a reboot? or is this likely to decrease the chances of successfully installing things? >-----Original Message----- >Hi, > >Yes, unfortunately that is a distinct possibility. Hi,

Selective startup sort of worked, one game got further
than it has in a while before stopping and one other was actually installing, well that is until my computer crashed, blue screen of death and memory dump style, KERNEL_STACK_INTERNAL_ERROR, I frequently get blue screen of death errors when I am installing games, especially when it looks like they will install, could this be an issue that requires a repair of XP? one problem I have is, if I have to repair will any drivers I have installed since first installation be overwritten? and also is it possible to repair the installation from windows or does it require booting from the original XP cd-rom? >-----Original Message----- >Hi, > >Try your preferred method first, and if that doesn't work, >then try the method suggested by Microsoft. :-) > >-- >Cheers, Windows XP MVP Shell / User >Jimmy S. http://mvp.support.microsoft.com > > >Game FAQs: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx? scid=FH;[LN];gms >Visit my Zone.com / Gaming Helpsite: http://nibblesnbits.tk or Call / Contact >MS Support at: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx? scid=sz;en-us;top >My advice is donated "AS IS" without warranty; nor do I confer any rights. >_________________________________________________________ > >"H MIllward" <(E-Mail Removed)> wrote in message news:13fcf01c4443e$0dc14e90$(E-Mail Removed)... >| Thanks are due yet again but I was wondering, is it >| strictly necessary to disable everything in MSCONFIG or >| can I just boot up normally and disable them when they >| load and attempt to install without a reboot? or is this >| likely to decrease the chances of successfully installing >| things? >| >-----Original Message----- >| >Hi, >| > >| >Yes, unfortunately that is a distinct possibility. >| Let's reinstall... >| > >| >Here's how to properly install or reinstall a game (and >| patch): >| > >| >Step A: Temporarily disable Startup programs one at a >| time, starting with >| > Firewall, Antivirus & AdBlockers using >| this method: >| > http://support.microsoft.com/ scid=331796 >| or this utility: >| > >| http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php Reboot, go >| to Step B. >| > >| >Step B: In Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs, delete >| the game and then >| > the game's folder especially if you >| previously experienced problems >| > with a patch, or if you installed the >| Trial, Mods, NO CD patches, etc. >| > >| >Note: Click Start to Search or Find your game. Hi,
Repairing Windows will overwrite any updated drivers you have installed. You should download those and save them to a folder in advance. I suggest downloading Motherboard Chipset drivers, Video drivers, Sound drivers, Network Card drivers, Monitor drivers, and the latest SECURITY updates. You'll need your CD to repair Windows XP, here's how: -- How To Repair Windows: Unplug from your Internet connection, and then repair Windows: using this method: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm * Download the Sasser patch to reinstall it after you repair Windows!
