I have a big problem when it comes to installing games, I
used to suffer from it a while ago but it sorted itself
out. The problem is this, whenever I try to install games
the installation starts normally but then when files are
copying an error message appears telling me that the
media is corrupt or sometimes I just get a critical error
and the usual XP memory dump and BSOD. I KNOW these discs
aren't corrupted because the games install on other
computers without difficulty and also when I overcome my
problems the games install. The installation drive is a
brand new LG dvd/cd-rw combo drive with the latest
firmware with a brand new IDE cable and I am running an
up to date copy of XP Pro. I also have up to date sound
and graphics drivers and same goes for my mobo chipset.
Any suggestions would be welcome, thanks.

Hi "H Millward",

It's possible that an antivirus program is installed on your
system and is corrupting the installation process.

thanks Jimmy, for the suggestion, I do have antivirus
software installed (McAfee Internet Security 6.0, fully
up to date) however the problems persist sometimes even
when I disable it, although could it be possible that if
my virus scan was disabled AFTER beginning to install BUT
BEFORE copying files that the virus scanner would cause
difficulty?

Hi,

Yes, unfortunately that is a distinct possibility. Let's reinstall...

Here's how to properly install or reinstall a game (and patch):

Step A: Temporarily disable Startup programs one at a time, starting with
Firewall, Antivirus & AdBlockers using this method:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=331796 or this utility:
http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php Reboot, go to Step B.

Step B: In Control Panel / Add-Remove Programs, delete the game and then
the game's folder especially if you previously experienced problems
with a patch, or if you installed the Trial, Mods, NO CD patches, etc.

Note: Click Start to Search or Find your game. Many times there are two installs
of the same game on a system and the patch installs to the wrong one. Also if you
installed a Trial version of the game, this could be causing a conflict.. Uninstall it
and delete the folder.

Step C: Install and Run Regcleaner and if it finds any stray registry keys for the
game, delete them. Reboot your computer, and then re-install the game.
Regcleaner Download: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download460.html

Step D: Play a single player game, using an administrators account if necessary.

Step E: Download new game patches or mods in case the old ones are corrupt.
Double click the patch/mod to install it. If it's a .zip file, unzip it into the
game's folder and follow the instruction in it's readme.txt file.

Step F: Reboot your computer, verify that your game is working properly, and
re-enable any programs that you disabled using the method in Step A.

Cheers,
Jimmy S.

Thanks are due yet again but I was wondering, is it
strictly necessary to disable everything in MSCONFIG or
can I just boot up normally and disable them when they
load and attempt to install without a reboot? or is this
likely to decrease the chances of successfully installing
things?

Hi,

Try your preferred method first, and if that doesn't work,
then try the method suggested by Microsoft. :-)

Selective startup sort of worked, one game got further
than it has in a while before stopping and one other was
actually installing, well that is until my computer
crashed, blue screen of death and memory dump style,
KERNEL_STACK_INTERNAL_ERROR, I frequently get blue screen
of death errors when I am installing games, especially
when it looks like they will install, could this be an
issue that requires a repair of XP? one problem I have
is, if I have to repair will any drivers I have installed
since first installation be overwritten? and also is it
possible to repair the installation from windows or does
it require booting from the original XP cd-rom?

Hi,

Repairing Windows will overwrite any updated drivers
you have installed. You should download those and
save them to a folder in advance.

I suggest downloading Motherboard Chipset drivers,
Video drivers, Sound drivers, Network Card drivers,
Monitor drivers, and the latest SECURITY updates.

You'll need your CD to repair Windows XP, here's how:
--
How To Repair Windows:
Unplug from your Internet connection, and then repair Windows:
using this method: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
* Download the Sasser patch to reinstall it after you repair Windows!

Afterwards, boot up your system, turn on your XP Internet Firewall,
plug back into your Internet connection and install all Critical and
