Anxious to build..wait for new chipset?

I'm anxious to build a new system but some advice from the more experienced
builders would be helpful. Should I wait for the new Intel chipset if I decide to
go Pentium and maybe extend my next build time longer? I realize the 875p supports
up 3.4 gig prescott but beyond that the 770 chipset comes in doesn't?

There is =always= something you could wait for. New chipset, new CPU,
new package, new memory organization, new PCI standard, new ATA standard
... whatever. Few of them IME are actually worth waiting for.

Personally I'd build it when you need to, and I'd avoid 'bleeding edge'
technology and components anyway (let someone else play pioneer for the
first 3-4 months, when things tend to be hard to get, over priced, and
extra buggy). YMMV .. maybe you enjoy the challenge more than the end
result.

The word I've seen is that Grantsdale/Alderwood will be monikered as the
i915/i925 chipsets. What may be more important to you than the actual
chipset is the socket changeover to LG775. I haven't seen any specs on
Grantsdale/Alderwood, in particular if it has a wider (36-bit) address
bus... if that matters to you.

In article <(E-Mail Removed)>,

Thanks, that was my interest actually..seeing the results of the socket 775 when
released. I also concur with what GSV mentioned..chasing the latest/greatest,I'm
trying not to do that but I would like to get off to a good start as far as the
prescott goes.

Intel is so far behind AMD at the moment - and apparently for
at least the next year - that it is highly contradictory to
associate "chasing the latest/greatest" with "Prescott".

If someone is "Anxious to build..wait for new chipset?",
I can understand if they are debating something like
nForce3 150 vs nForce3 250 or VIA KT890. But what the
heck is the point of waiting for a Socket 775 chipset ?
all it gets you is a new socket for which Intel doesn't
have any processor worth a damn - and won't for such
a long time that there will probably be yet another new
Intel socket before they have a processor that can compete
with AMD64.

That is a *lot* of new stuff then: LG775, Prescott, PCI Express and no AGP
compatibility AIUI. It's going to be "interesting" to see exactly what's
in the new chipsets, viz. can Intel get away with a 32-bit FSB address?
