Hi all,

I still hace PC-cillin 200 on my machines which causes me a few headaches
but it's not that bad.

Some of the problems encountered were:
- needing to reboot sometimes to regain mailbox connectivity
- Needing to reboot every 6 hours because the IOmonitor thingy scrambles
TCPIP requests making internet access more of a lottery.

2000 is the last product that they've produced where a single license can be
used on multiple machines.
I use 3 machines on the same network and only want to pay once for good
protection.
I've a DSL lan with a hardware firewall/dsl router

My list of requirements are as such:

- Runs concurently on more than 1 machine on a network
- Doesn't need periodic reboots
plus the usual features

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Hoi,

Here at work we use F-Secure AV, and I must say I'm happy with it.
You have the 'Home' version, with automatic updates and this works fine,
your clients even share the updates over the LAN (if enabled) to save
'external' bandwidth.
The Corporate version also has more network features (RC, reports) but
is for that almost identical.

It's simple to install, does not bug you every five minutes like NAV :-)
and has little configuration options, but nevertheless does a good job.

Or you can use a free one like AVG, that's also quite decent for it's
price :-p

Regards,

Wimmy

Just had a look at AVG - No network compatibility for the free edition
though.
Running more than one version on the same home lan seems to be something
that isn't documented for a lot of products or isn't available.
That single issue (together with internet corruption) is what's going to
swing my purchase.
Thanks for the input though.

I use Norton 2000 and I have to reboot daily to restore Outlook 2000 mailbox
connectivity. It's not limited to PC-cillin. (Which is a stoopid name
anyway.)

So AV is just badly written software then? Man this is looking bad...

NOD32 annual multi user licence for 3 machines is only 64ukp (ex VAT)

Superb AV software, very light on resources, and a lot better than
anything i've seen mentioned thus far in this thread.

But of course, not knowing your budget, or if you want to be a
freeloader, then i can't suggest anything else ...

Phew, that's a bit steep...

Better's always subjective... PC-Cillin gave me very good protection for the
2 years I paid for it (after the 1 year free with motherboard...)
I might take the same route - sell my motherboard and get a new one with
good a/v software - it's a useful criteria if you can find out what
antivirus software each comes with.
So far I've got:
MSI: Trend PCCillin (doesn't co-operate on the same network)
Aopen: Norton antivirus (don't know about network...)

I'm not a freeloader. Peace of mind is important to me especially
considering the protection I want.
I have been upset by McAffee before though as I bought a relatively
expensive package that they no longer support (or provide updates/upgrades
for)
However, if the only way of determining which package is right for my free
PC's, try before you buy might be an option.

Been there and done that already.
When PCCillin freezes it takes down outlook and causes a bit of a mess.
Still even with that fix, after between 3-9 hours internet access - not
email access is compromised/corrupted.
e.g. I get bbc.co.uk when visiting www.google.com with a Deutsche post
logo.... a real mess.
thanks though.

It is? Not when you consider the level of protection offered it isn't,
YMMV of course.

Norton AV costs average 40ukp on the High Street for a single user home
licence.

The multi-user licence of NOD32 entitles you to use the admin version
which means your LAN PC's can update from a mirror on the LAN instead of
sucking up internet bandwidth.

NOD32 has also ranked at the top in independent tests.

I didn't say you were, sorry if i gave that impression.

> Peace of mind is important to me

Absolutely ..... NOD32 it is then ;-)

> I have been upset by McAffee before

I will *never* (knowingly) use a Mcafee package again.

NOD32 has a 30 day evaluation period .... fully working, no
restrictions.

www.nod32.com
