I can't seem to download my mcafee antivirus program. I had one loaded but it
wasn't working. Also can't download Spysweeper for MSN. What's wrong?

You're probably infected. As McAfee is not a good program, you would be
better off backing up all your data and reinstalling XP. That, believe
it or not, will be faster than trying to clean up your computer. Also,
you can then NOT install McAfee or Norton and use a good, free program
like Avast and your XP firewall. In addition, I would recommend Spybot,
Search and Destroy, Spywareblaster and Spywareguard. For cleaning temp
files, I recommend Crap Cleaner.

Do you mean "download"... as in get it from the Internet, or do you
mean "install" as in you have it and you're trying to get it running
on your computer?

Alias,

Do you have any factoids to back up your claim that McAfee sucks?
I used McAfee for a long time and haven't ever been infected by a
virus/malware.
I am a lot online and a general active computeruser, and have been using
all Microsoft OS since W95.

I am not claiming you are wrong, but could you please provide a reliable
source for your claim?

Regards,
Erwin Moller

Alias doesn't provide sources for his drivel in the newsgroups. He's simply
an opinionated troll.

There's nothing wrong with claiming he is wrong...he is.

Download, install, update and scan with the 2 Programs below.
If you can not download them in normal Mode, do it all in Safe Mode with
Networking.
All info below.

http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Spybot Search & Destroy 1.6 is a very good, FREE Anti-Spyware Program.
Download, install, update, and immunize your System with it.
Then SCAN with it.
Update it, and scan your System once a fortnight.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes is as the name says, a Malware Remover!
For the Free version scroll down their page to either download from
Download.com, or Major Geeks.com

Download, install, and update.

Important re: Safe Mode
If you happen to find a problem that you can’t uninstall / delete, reboot
the computer, and go into Safe Mode.
To get into Safe mode, tap F8 right at Power On / Startup, and use UP arrow
key to get to Safe Mode from list of options, then hit ENTER.
RESCAN your computer with your Anti-Virus, Malwarebytes and Spybot S & D
while in Safe Mode.

If unable to install above Programs in Normal Mode:
Sometimes Trojans, Viruses, Malware, etc stop you installing and/or updating
Programs to remove them.
If that happens, reboot into Safe Mode with Networking (from F8 list of
Startup Options), and install, update and scan from there.

Although Alias is not universally loved and respected, some of your
peers hold the same poor opinion of mcafee that Alias expresses. In none
of the following quotes are any sources reported or, for that matter,
asked for after the statements were made. His being labeled a troll
should have nothing to do with his opinion on this issue. YMMV

"My recommendation is that you do not reinstall it, but instead
uninstall and replace it. I, and many others here, consider McAfee to be
the second worst (only Norton is worse) security software available."
Ken Blake 11/6/2008

"McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool:

Personally, I wouldn't have anything from McAfee or Norton on any
machine of mine.
AVG is good as is Avast which I use. Neither are resource hogs either."
Bruce Hagen 1/14/2009

"McAfee is awful. Suggest you uninstall it and use a better antivirus. I
like NOD32 (commercial) or Avast (has a free version). If you want to
keep McAfee, then uninstall/reinstall. See if that takes care of the
issue."

It's early yet, but I think at year's end you'll still be in the
running for the The Understatement of the Year Award.

See the above links for McAfee's detection rates compared to other programs.

See above.

Free, Avast or AVG.

Pay: NOD32 or Kaspersky

Of course, this is as of now. Who knows what will be good in the future.

Personally, I use Linux for the Internet so I don't even have an anti
virus installed.
