For several days now I have not been able to get the free version of
AntiVir to update its virus definitions. I have reinstalled the
program and turned off my firewall but all AntiVir does is say it is
opening the file on the server for a few minutes and then it says
that it has timed out.

Does anyone know what could be wrong and what I can do to fix it?
Does anyone know of another free antivirus program I can use? Thank
you in advance for all replies.

I just heard a TV commercial about an automobile that has a rear
entertainment system. I immediately wondered exactly how would an
automobile entertain one's rear and would it be safe to drive while
one's rear was being entertained.

The AntiVir servers are probably down again. This tends to happen when
they are on overload right after a major update. There's nothing you
can do but wait for them to start working again. I got sick of it and
switched to ClamWin. It is open source freeware; the updates are
frequent, comprehensive, and download quickly. ClamWin found a couple
of nasties which AntiVir had been overlooking. Files have to be scanned
manually (although it does integrate with MS Outlook), so some will
prefer Avast or AVG, but I am pleased with ClamWin.

I have been able to update in the morning hours and late evening
(Central US Time Zone) with no problems the past couple of days, however
before that I was getting a lot of time outs. BtW the new features are
making it much better. Now you no longer get prompted to update or
close the updater...it does it automatically.

"It does it automatically". But I would like to be able to turn that
option off. What I find irritating is that after just a simple update
of the virus definitions, it asks if you want to reboot the computer
(and OK-button is selected, just accidentally hit ENTER, and you'll
losse all your unsaved data).

I'm not a progammer, but I don't think that it should be very hard for
the program to re-read the (updated) virusdefintions without
rebooting.

they released a new version recently (Program 6.32.0.7 AFAICS), so the
server is overloaded as usual. You can try it in the nightly hours
(german time zone), I had best results between 10pm and 5am in the
past.

Thanks for your reply, but before, when I had setting 'allow
automattic internet updates' ON, it would start automatically of
course, and if an update found, it would install it without
interaction, and when done, it said that the update was installed
(never asked about rebooting if update only where virus definitions).

If no updates where found, it would say: "the current version is
allreaddy up-to-date, server does not contain newer version, would you
like to quit the program now?".

Now, with 'allow automattic internet updates' ON, there's not this
communication from the program to the user anymore, only if there's un
update found, and installed, it says: "would you like to reboot now?",
and it askes this even if there only was an update of virus
definitions, which is a kind of not nessacary, in my opinion.

When I set 'allow automattic internet updates' to OFF, I have to
confirm to may actions.

I Liked the previous situation MUCH More.

The help file say, under 'Settings for automatic internet updates':

"Install automatic after download (Alt+I)

If you have activated this function, the setup will be estabished
automatic after a successfull download."

I would like to disable that option, but the option can not be found.

(Under 'Internet Updater', 'Settings' I only have 'Create a link on
the desktop for the downloaded installaton file' and 'Hangup a dialup
connection which was opended for the internet update').

I have the latest updates of all 4 components:

Program: 6.32.00.07
San Engine: 6.32.0.6
VDF file: 6.32.0.46
DLL 6.32.00.45

And the program build is: 10.68 (21.09.2005).

Any suggestions?
