1) - ii) proxy error on manual update or report submission (Sun Java VM? Non-MS browser, like firefox? Try later, server down?)

Got this message if "work offline" under the File menu in
Internet explorer is checked.

I have the same problem.
I checked, it is not firewall related problem (in my case
at least). First few days MSAS reported of new defs
updates few time a day (but usually with the same update
ver. number) and than it started to fail retrieving
updates. Now it states that defs update nr 5686 is he
latest though it is 5689 in fact and keep failing
connecting update server (manually and automatically).
I suppose it might be a new malware related problem.
What do you think ?

Now MSAS is able to connect server and claims to download
defs ver 5689 but actually old 5685 remains active and
manual redownload repeats the procedure
of downloading 5689 but witout success of proper
installation of 5689.

What's more, over weekend I visited www.virustotal.co.uk
and www.theregister.co.uk and somewhere there I caught a
bunch of newest malware exploaded like bomb in my PC.
Probably, somebody spuffed the site, because I found
there a page with "antispyware software" advice which
after downloading installed spyware instead removing it !

Be carefull dowloading "free antispyware trials" which
you are not sure. It may be a spyware bomb !!!

You're giving a vivid illustration of one of the great hazards of this area
of computing safety.

There are myriad imposter apps out there:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

Now--about those definitions.

I believe that you are seeing an appearance bug, and that, in fact, you have
the new definitions in place, but lets see if we can actually find out.

This KB article gives a means of accurately determining which definitions
are in place on the machine--it may not be updated yet, but it should be
useful nonetheless, I think.

Information about update files and how to determine whether you are on the
latest (technical)
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;892519

Here's how to work around the appearance bug, which affects both the
notifications from the Autoupdater, and the version as shown in Help, about.

Go to File, check for updates. Observe whether, in fact, an update actually
takes place--if you have updated already, it won't--you'll get two stars and
be told you are current, without seeing the extra lines involved in an
actual update. Then go to Help, About, and observe the definition number.
It should be correct.
