I tried to download AntiSpyware Beta 1 and at install point told that the vs
expired 12/31/05 and to contact Microsoft for new version. Tech service
tried to assist but was unable to install newer version; same message
received. Referred me to newsgroup for assist. Can anyone help a person not
very technical resolve this?

You need to dig into the settings for your locale, in control panel. In
addition to making sure date and time are correct, within the Locale
settings are two drop down controls--for Short date format and Long date
format. Reset those to the very first choice in both cases.

I can't guarantee that this will work for all language versions and
locales,
but it has worked for nearly everyone so far.

I think we can get this fixed for you:

1) open Windows Explorer--right-click Start, and choose Explore.

Navigate to \program files\Microsoft Antispyware--i.e. the folder in which
Microsoft Antispyware was installed--for many, this will be C:\Program
Files, Microsoft Antispyware.

In this folder, double click on: \program files\microsoft
antispyware\gcasSWUpdater.exe

Look for an icon which looks like a satellite dish.

This should, perhaps after a pause--initiate a popup from Microsoft
Antispyware offering you an auto-download of an updated version. Accept
this offer, and allow the update to install.

This has worked for most users--please try it. And let us know whether it
works--if it does not, there's an alternative.

I tried to run the gcasSWUpdater icon, but after i double click it nothing
happens. Is there another way to get to the updated version??

There won't be any directly visible response. However, that action, for
most people, seems to trigger the offer of an autoupdate.

Here's an alternative. One theory about the problem with updating is that a
file in the installation folder isn't being properly updated and thus the
"still expired." message.

1) uninstall Microsoft Antispyware.

2) delete \program files\microsoft antispyware and all subfolders.
You will lose access to any quarantined items, history, and custom settings.

3) reinstall Microsoft Antispyware from your current download, taking care
to be logged in as the administrator who will most frequently use it.

Other alternative suggestions that work for some, but not all, are to
download from an alternative source--MajorGeeks has worked for a number of
people.

Just a quick note of thanks . . . your solution worked for me. I tried
several times to get my MSAS updated after it expired on 12/31. I thought my
problems were because I forgot to remove it before I downloaded the update.
Then I tried several times to remove, then download, install the update w/o
success.

Finally, I went to CompUSA and bought SpySweeper. Then today I found your
post and tried it, and it worked. Thanks (do you work for Microsoft, or just
an Good Samaritan)

Anyway, I was wondering if "Lost in Vancouver" didn't get the update, by
double clicking if he didn't have his defaults set to open an executable by
double clicking. Maybe if he right clicked, then selected OPEN, if that
might work. Also, if he was using "dial-up", it would probably help if he
was on-line at the time.

The download should simply upgrade what's in place--there's no need to
remove it or shut it down before downloading.

Glad the workaround did finally function for you.

I'm just a volunteer--Microsoft does recognize some of us with the MVP
