How long have you tried leaving it in this state?

There seem to be times when this beta code pauses for lengthy amounts of
time--hours, according to some reports, particularly when large number of
items or lines in a text file are involved.

Try an update install to see if it changes the behavior?

control panel, add or remove programs, Microsoft
Antispyware, change, update
