I have AVG 8.5 Free Edition installed on the computer. Checking the history
of the scans today, I notice that they go all the way back to May 2008. I
wonder if it is safe to delete all 2008 scans and only keep this years. I
thought that the program would automatically delete old scans but evidently
it doesn't. Would appreciate input on this. Thank you!

Yes, it's safe to delete that data/history.

As long as you never have any warnings about
detecting a Virus just delete them as they are of
no value.

It's just a history, just kept for your own information, you can delete it
at any time. I would also delete the contents of the "Virus Vault" (if any)
at the same time so you can sort of "start again" with keeping a record of
the infected files that AVG finds and quarantines.
