Nick, I've found that the best anti-virus that does not bog down the system
is Trend Micro's PC-cillin. I use it on older, slower PCs and the
performance hit is only slightly noticeable.

What's also great about PC-cillin is that if you are in a situation where
you don't need your antivirus, say battery powered on an airplane, when you
disable it you get ALL of your performance back!

If you don't already know, Symantec's antivirus is the worst CPU hog there
is.
