Antec SX635BII Front Panel USB Won't Work

I have an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard in a Antec SX635BII. The
cable for the front panel USB connectors is a godawful thing with tiny
individual sockets for each of the 8 pins.

Because of the risk of connecting the pins wrong I did it with a
friend. I determined where each pin should go, he connected them and
I checked to be sure they were right.

Neither front panel connector worked. So, we switched roles -- he
directed and checked and I connected the sockets.

Still, neither front panel connector works.

Based on the printing on the tiny sockets they're wired as follows:

#1 +5v red
#1 -D white
#1 +D green
#1 ground brown

#2 +5 orange
#2 -D yellow
#2 +D gray
#2 ground purple

unused ground blue & black wires
[the SX635BII manual says there are only 8 wires but there are 9 or 10
depending on how you count this double]

I assume the cable is wired wrong. But, both channels?

Anybody else had this problem?

Not yet. I have 2 Antec cases with the front USB ports that work great with
my A7N8X boards.

The wiring you listed looks correct and I'm pretty sure that's the same way
mine are connected.

Do you have all the USB ports enabled in BIOS? Assuming Windows O/S what
does Device Manager show for the status of USB in your system?

A quick and fairly easy check to verify your motherboard is working
correctly, in regards to USB, is to connect the ASUS supplied USB expansion
ports to those same motherboard connections. If that works then you know the
wiring is most likely wrong somewhere.

Good luck. HTH.

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.

I haven't found any place to enable/disable USB ports selectively in
the BIOS. There's one place to choose disabled or USB 1 or USB 1&2,
but that appears to be for all USB ports and the four on the back are
working.

That's a good question. I don't know what it should show. Mine shows
no anomolies ( Exclamation points, yellow circles, etc.) and here's
the list Universal Serial Bus Controllers:

Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

Does this look right?

Arggg. I've taken those infuriating little connectors off and put
them back again this evening, but you're right that should help
isolate the problem.

Some of the Antec cases have a design flaw in the frontside USB connectors;
they work for USB1.1 but not 2.0... I contacted Antec and they sent me a
replacement connector module (free of charge, of course).
