Like others, I'm perplexed with a windows installer problem.
Tried all usual solutions, including KB article 315346. Came across Wesley
Vogel's thread... Checked Zone Alarm, but didn't have the same corruption.
My problem stems from an incident with a crash on SBS 2k3. The GPO was wiped
out and I've gotten the server back up with most functionality except for the
\SYSVOL which had to be rebuilt. I'm not sure that its totally correct, but
for the moment, the network seems to be working okay for other users (same
rights and permissions).
At the same time as the server crash, my workstation was crippled... this
was shortly after an IE security update (just after Christmas) and Norton AV
was crippled... 100% CPU utilization was the symptom. Couldn't use
Uninstaller, so I manually deleted all instances of SYMANTEC & Norton from
the registry and manually deleted the program directories. 100% CPU went
away, but Windows Installer won't work.
If I try to uninstall a program, I get a Error: 1015, Failed to Connect to
server, error: 0x80040154. If I try to send it to the Help Center, I get a
This Page cannot be displayed message. Is this server the SBS server or the
XP server service?
Should I do a reinstall of Windows Installer? I have recently installed the
recent upgrade to try to fix it. (It installed cleanly with no problems.) Any
other suggestions other than a bare-bone install of XP? If it turns out
that's the only way, I'm quivering... facing at least a couple weeks of work
reinstalling and configuring applications (graphics, web dev, etc. and
tuning).
TIA
