Hi all,

I hope someone can help me, this is extremely frustrating.

Now I have read litterally over an hundred threads on vista freezing and
nothing has helped. All the threads Ihave read state their computers freeze
for 30 seconds or so; some on boot or startup, with dell comps or laptops
etc, however mine does not fall directly into any of those catagories.

I've had the computer for about a year now. it's running core duo 3.0ghz
dual core. i have 1g ddr200 ram, onboard video/sound.

I have recently upgraded from XP to Vista basic prem with an clean install
(i think you would call it an clean install - I now have an folder called
windows.old created after the install) and have had freezing problems.

instead of freezing for 10 to 30 seconds. Mine freezes anywhere from 20
seconds up until 10 or 15 mins! I never had any of these problems with xp at
all.

it happens at random. sometimes after 5 mins, sometimes after 15 mins. it
can happen twice in 2 minutes or in 1/2 hour. I can be doing anything from
browsing a web page to listenting to music or just writing a quick note in
notepad.

guys i would really appreciate any suggestions or guidance here as i've been
trying to find the answer for over a month now.

thanks all.

Freezing, as a general rule, (that does return to activity,) indicates a
'resource use' problem. You are going to need some tools to help you narrow
down what does it. (Just saying it freezes is like saying 'my car won't
start', the first thing the mechanic says is "Does it have gas?" )
Task Manager might show some Process that is taking all resources. You might
find an error "red X" to click when you run the command 'perfmon /rel' at
the Command Prompt. There is a possibility for a background app running,
like this newsgroup and your mail check might be downloading. Even a normal
process like Defragmentation, or 'Indexing' your Search data might do it.
Vista is a complex machine; some background stuff can be very 'resource
intensive'. One gig of ram may not be enough for the way you like to use it.

Frustrating for you I'm sure but it is difficult to diagnose such a
seemingly selective problem. My Vista has never frozen.. good for me... but
that also implies that the source of your problem is something specific to
your computer. Whether that source is hardware or software needs to be
determined. You know best when the freezes first started happening. Whatever
was in the computer at that time would be the starting point to look for the
cause. One thing suggested by the symptoms is that whatever the cause is it
is something that is operating in the background. Could be software, could
be a driver or hardware not responding. Vista has a number of tools you can
use to help track down problems... Task manager, Event Viewer (first place
to look for errors, info notices), Reliability and Performance monitor,
System Health Report, Memory Diagnostics tool.
