I have taken one of my internal hard drives, and placed it in a usb
enclosure. The enclosure is usb2.0, and I have plugged it directly into my
PC with usb 2.0 ports. Device manager shows the usb mass storage device
with a yellow exclaimation mark. The error code is 10, can not start device.

The drive is partitioned (previously used) and the enclosure has it's own
power supply. There was no manual with the enclosure (COOLMAX 510UB), so I
set the drive as a master.
Anybody have a good list of things to chack to remedy this problem..??

What type of hard drive, if it is Western Digital it would need to be jumpered as single and not
master.

Does your computer have usb 2.0 port?

i have experienced the same problem, and have tried jumpering the drive all 3
ways (master, slave, single) with same results.

i suspect it is a service pack 2 issue. microsoft may have an existing
hotfix but is not confirming it thru normal postings. they have however
hinted to a hotfix for a "device will not start (code 10)" proplem. the
problem is that they refer to it as a possible hotfix, and they are not
specific enough about the situations that the possible hotfix(s) will remedy.
also, they want you to pay for the call or email to them to discuss the
matter. if i understand correctly, you need to pay $35.00 to find out if
there is a hotfix (they may then waive the fee if there is one available, but
i am not sure).

microsoft makes a reference to the "device will not start (code 10)" issue
and states something to the effect that it may be best to wait for the hotfix
in the form of the service pack 2 update. once again, not being very clear on
the specific situations it may resolve.
