After updating Norton AntiVirus (2003) this morning (6/13/2004 defs) I
found that it took an excessive time to open any MS Word or Excel
document by doubleclicking in Explorer (Windows 2000 Pro). I have
neither the Office plugin nor AutoUpdate enabled.

While I was checking things out I noticed that the NAV program
LuComServer.EXE was briefly flashing into memory. I disabled that
program, and its corresponding .dll, by renaming them.

Now documents load correctly without an excessive wait.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I use to be with Norton and had the same problem as you. Norton take A LOT
OF RESOURCE on your system. This is why I have change to Kaspersky AV and I
have to say that I am very pleased with. Aslo when you make a virus update
with Norton it will download the all list everytime (use to do anyway), with
KAV it will download only the new list (take 1 minute if do this once a
week).

I have used both Norton and McAffee and I didn't like either. I use
Solo now, I really like it. It is small and I haven't hit anything so
far that it couldn't fix. With Norton I always had a 100 files I
couldn't use because it didn't know how to fix them. It is a bit more
than Norton at $29.95 but as far as I can tell, it is a one time fee,
I have never been asked to subscribe again. The downloads are pretty
painless even on my crappy 56 ks (running at 32ks) connection.

I find Avast is the quickest to update among free AVs, also no
delays during on-access scanning. If you are thinking of changing
AV's, before making another investment, see what you can get for
free.
