Should disabling onboard LAN in the bios cause WPA to kick in on XP Pro
SP2? After doing so I'm getting told to reactivate within 3 days.
The reason I disabled it is I'm getting this slow boot up problem which
many have complained about. XP has only been installed for about a
week, after buying a legit copy and a new hard disk. It was
problem-free and boot times were good. Then yesterday the slow startup
problem arose. This has happened in the past but usually after several
months of use.
I had played around with VMWare networking and thought this could be
the cause. Alas, I don't think so now.
There is nothing major in the event log. Last night I tried using
msconfig to do a diagnostic startup. After clicking apply it tells me
that access was denied for a service, although it still seems to work.
Is this normal or does it point to a naughty service or virus?
Since the fresh install, the only software added is anti-virus,
firewall, Mozilla Firefox and printer drivers. Also downloaded some of
the critical updates which could be the problem, especially since I
manually installed them in one shot without rebooting.
I do have an image of my xp partition made before installing vmware and
the updates so I'll put that back today. However I'm sure this problem
will arise again and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what
is going on? Oh, I tested my ram with memtest and checked my new hd
with several tools and they don't seem to be an issue. I also have
win98se installed which works fine.
