In the future there will be printers which will only use their ink. It would
probably be illegal under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act to make a device
which circumvents the anti-refill protection of the cartridge. I am glad I am
keeping my thing in my pants so that there will be at least one less human that
will have to endure printer ink price gouging.

It would be trivial for the printer to detect read only chips or reset chips
and refuse to play. They could get really nasty and permanetly disable the
printer if they choose to.
The car analogy is one I also use. Bad fuel in my honda can do lot of damage
but I still have to choice of a dozen brands.
What is possible with smart products is scarry. We used to joke about products
which are designed to break one day after the warranty expires - well now that
is totally possible. This morning I was wondering if there are actually any
laws against building a use-by date etc into a printer (or toaster, vcr
dishwasher etc).
Even if it was illegal it would be had to prove.
To some exptent HP forced my scanner upgrade by not providing win2000 driver
for my photosmart (the old scsii version) - I didn't buy HP next time
