Another question, vis-a-vis V700 color and exposure correction -- NOT slides

Taking a break from slides (see my recent and ongoing question) I tried the V700
on some old photographs, only to find that neither color correction nor
backlight correction are available when scanning reflective material!

Color correction I know I can do (albeit slowly) by hand, but I haven't figured
out what the backlight fix does, what ever it is, it doesn't show up in the
manual color tools. Does anyone know how to simulate this by hand?

I just found that I had to change the "Auto Exposure Type" to Photo.
