Just had the THIRD IBM DTLA 307045 75GXP go bad on me. Number one went bad
one week after I purchased it in November, 2000. Lots of chattering and
sectors not found errors. Returned it to the store and got a replacement.
This drive, number two, went bad in March 2002. Started chattering also,
and the DFT couldn't fix it.
RMA'd with IBM and got an exact replacement (yuck). This third drive was
obviously a refurb, as it had a sticker on it saying so. And interesting
that it was sent in a package that would have been rejected if I had sent
my drive the way IBM sent it to me. IBM says to always pack in foam
rubber. The drive that IBM sent me was supported on both ends by rigid
styrofoam. And right out of the bag it made an annoying bearing sound,
which made it impossible to use as a desktop disk. Placed it in a
seldom-used web-surfing machine I had setup in the living room.
Now this third disk has gone bad. On power-up it acts like it can't
initialize itself, making continuous seek sounds for about 3 minutes before
it gives up. The BIOS never sees it, nor does the DFT. It's basically a
dead disk. Surprisingly, Hitachi says this third disk is still under
warranty. Got an RMA. Should be interesting what is sent back.
