I've had this computer just 2 weeks. All was working fine. I have installed
just two programs, one being my embroidery digitizing software and the other
being McAfee. After installing the embroidery software, Windows defender
stopped working. If I try to start it, i get an error box telling me to go
to help and support to manually start defender. There is no information at
all in help about "Manually" starting defender. The error also pops up as
soon as I boot up the computer. Please help.

Try working through the MS Help and Support solutions contained in the
following article:

Thanks for posting that.

This is the reason why I ask whether users posting this error have an
anti-malware suite product installed. Symantec and McAfee, and probably
other vendors as well, disable Windows Defender when installed--Symantec
asks whether you wish to do this and recommends YES--but the person posting
the question here may either forget that interaction, or not be the person
who did the install.

In the case of Symantec products, I haven't seen this error message
generated--Windows Defender simply fails silently, but the error message can
be found in the Windows event logs.

The 2009 McAfee, Norton, Symantec, etc. anti-malware suite product for
Windows Vista disable Microsoft Windows Defender to improve system
performance. Windows Vista users who have installed these products should not
enable Windows Defender

If that 'error' message appears, disable Windows Defender from startup
(Start \ Run \ msconfig),

or if you wanna enable Windows Defender, go (Start \ Run \ services.msc) and
then turn off automatic scanning (in Windows Defender)

Sherry. This is what i did to resolve the problem.

Go to control panel. Click on administration tools. Click on services , it
will ask if you want to continue, accept.
You will see in the services panel , Name, Description, Status and Startup
Type.
Scroll down to Windows Defender.
In the "Startup Type" colum Double click under the windows defender row
another box apears.
"Widows Defender Properties"
Use the drop down box in Startup type and select automatic.
Click apply and ok.
Restart pc
This solved the problem
