Mistakenly thinking I was performing a "new" install, I actually
performed a "clean" install on partition 2, with a win 98 se left on
partition 1.

I now do not have a Boot Menu, but I do have two fully functional
operating systems networked with another win 98 machine, and on the
internet.

I can boot to xp from 98 by using PQ Boot, and can boot to 98 from XP
only by using the 98 boot disk on restart.

Question:

Can I edit the boot.ini file in xp to add a second boot option {and
thus get a boot menu) ??

Currently have

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating system]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS ="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

Can I add:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS ="Microsoft Windows 98 SE"
/fastdetect

other option is to only wipe out the clean install and start over?

thanks
johnSteve

Hello john,

1. Add the following to the beginning of boot.ini file:
[boot loader]
timeout = 5

following this will be the line:
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS (which is already found
in your boot.ini file)

2. Add this line in the [operating systems] part of the boot.ini file:
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98 SE"

where C:\ here, refers to the partition drive in which windows 98 is
installed.

This will add the option of 98 SE to the bootup list.

Note: The timeout value specifies the time for the system to wait before it
chooses the default operating system to boot up. The value is specified in
seconds.

Regards,

Gatt

Did bring the boot menu up, and would boot to XP as default fine. When
Windows 98 selected though, got error message;

I/O Error accessing boot sector file
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\BOOTSECT.DOS

had to do a hard re-boot.

still trying to refer to partition 2
when I added my line, started getting missing or corrupt file
hal.dll

I was really hoping that was a wah hoo, but just wiped out the
partition, and started over the right way. Couple of hours back to
where I was

When in doubt
wipe it out
