Can anyone tell me how I can help my daughter with a problem on her
PC.

Whenever she loads a page on the unternet, she always gets the
message
come up:
"A script is accessing some software (an active x control) on this
page which has been marked as safe for scripting. Do you want to
allow
this?"

Can anyone explain why this is happening and how she can stop it.

Because a setting in Internet Options>Security tab>Internet Zone is set to
Prompt. The setting is in the second section, last setting, "Script ActiveX
controls marked safe for scripting." This was probably changed from the
default Enable to Prompt by some utility that considers that setting unsafe
and you likely changed it without really knowing what it was doing. Your
best bet is to click on the Default Level button and then watch to see if
the behavior returns.

In IE6, click on Tools > Internet Options > Security tab. In Internet zone,
click on the Custom Level button, Scroll down to "Script ActiveX controls marked
safe for scripting" and change from Prompt to Enable. Click on OK buttons to get
out.

This fix may be similar if not the same in IE7. If she's using a different
browser, advise in feedback.

What you should know about active content

Active content (for example, things like stock tickers, video, or
animation) can enhance your browsing experience. It relies on either
ActiveX controls or computer code (called a script) to work properly.

ActiveX controls can sometimes malfunction or display content that you
don't want. They can also be used to collect information from your
computer without your permission, damage information on your computer,
install software without your consent, or allow someone else to control
your computer remotely. Given these risks, you should only install these
programs if you completely trust the publisher.

When you encounter a webpage (or insert a CD) that is trying to run
active content on your computer, you should receive a message prompting
you to decide whether you want to allow the content to run. If you are
certain that you want to allow the active content, click Yes in the
message box. By clicking Yes, you allow the active content to run on the
webpage or CD you're viewing on that occasion. If you leave the page and
return to it later, you will receive the message again. You can avoid
being prompted every time by allowing any website to run scripts and
ActiveX controls, however you should be extremely careful about doing
this, as it might put your computer at risk for malicious software.

To allow any website to run scripts and ActiveX controls on your
computer
In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet
Options.
Click the Advanced tab, and then, in the Settings list, scroll down to
the Security section.
Select the Allow active content to run in files on My Computer check
box, and then click OK.
To allow any CD to run scripts and ActiveX controls on your computer
In Internet Explorer, click the Tools button, and then click Internet
Options.
Click the Advanced tab, and then, in the Settings list, scroll down to
the Security section.
Select the Allow active content from CDs to run on My Computer check
box, and then click OK.

what if you cant change it in the tools>internet options ?

can anyone give me a hit to which registry key in the Lockdown Zone
(1,2,3or4) i need to modify so that activeX automatically loads with out the
anoying pop up?

This just hints more strongly that the problem is a
Security/Antivirus/AntiSpyware program of some kind. Somewhere in the
settings, you have chosen to make the machine ultra safe and so it sets
those settings and locks them (actually, it was probably a default setting,
but you still have to find it and change it.

What security apps/suites do you use? What anti-spyware utilities do you
have installed?

Here is what happened.
I did it all in the registry. Created DWORD keys and modified some exsisting
once. I got all the information on what to do from Retina software. Now that
I locked down the system, its a bit too anoying to always click yes run
activeX control, so. I am trying to figure out what registry keys I modified
to simply sent the setting back to auto run activeX control. I know you will
say just go back to Retina and change it back, but it wont do it because it
was a manual setting change.

I can't see how I can assist you. If you didn't keep backups of the Keys you
changed, Keys you created, etc., with notes galore, and you can't go back to
Retina Support and ask them, "How did we do that tweak and how do I undo
it?", then I guess you'll have to hope someone else who uses Retina and
knows the tweak comes along.

Personally, I detest the whole idea. There's got to be some kind of karmic
justice in Dad's spyware causing Daughter to become as annoyed as possible
at Dad on what's got to be an almost minute by minute basis. Sure hope you
don't have to flatten it! "Annoyance" won't suffice if that becomes the
case, <bg>.
