Annoying VLC media player problem

Someone mentioned VLC media player for playing formats which somehow
can't be played in MPC etc. I tried it and it works, and without a
desperate search for additional codecs. However, there is a very
annoying problem. Quite a bit of the video remains visible when VLC is
minimized and/or another window is active. It is also visible in VLC's
menus, making altering the preferences for instance. quit difficult as
hardly anything can be seen. What to do about it?
